The Center for Energy at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is a leading research center focused on the transformation of the energy system towards renewable and decentralized solutions. It develops technologies and models for a sustainable, secure, and affordable energy supply. The focus is on innovations in the areas of energy grids, storage technologies, renewable energy systems, and the digitalization of the energy sector.
The Integrated Energy Systems department is dedicated to the system-wide optimization and integration of various energy sectors (electricity, heating/cooling, gas, mobility). The goal is to advance sector coupling in order to increase efficiency, make optimal use of renewable energies, and improve the resilience of the overall system. Advanced modeling and simulation tools are used to analyze complex energy systems and develop innovative solutions.
- Energy logistics focuses on ensuring the supply of sufficiently available, sustainably produced energy for both industry and society.
- Hydrogen logistics addresses the optimization of the entire (energy) transport chain, considering all modes of transport (pipeline, ship, rail, road).
- Sector coupling and system integration involve the development of models and concepts that intelligently connect electricity, heat, mobility, and gas to maximize the use of renewable energy.
- Digital twins and AI applications enable real-time analysis, forecasting, and control of complex energy systems by leveraging digital replicas and artificial intelligence technologies.
