DACIO

Digital Automated Coupling in Infrastructure Operations

About the Project

A sustainable development of freight supply that minimizes negative environmental impact can only be achieved by shifting the modal split (distribution of traffic volume across different modes of transport) in favor of rail. However, increasing capacity, productivity, and quality in rail freight transport requires innovation, as the rail sector is currently hindered by outdated technology and a shortage of skilled workers. Across the EU, shunting personnel are increasingly difficult to recruit. The use of modern technology can offer a solution. Train formation using Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) would reduce the need for personnel and allow processes in rail freight transport to be optimized and streamlined. Advancing this objective is the main goal of the current project.
